Event Description

Alison M. Vacca is Gevork M. Avedissian Associate Professor of Armenian History and Civilization at Columbia University. Her work relies on Arabic and Armenian sources to explore the history of the Umayyad and early ʿAbbasid North (Armenia and Caucasian Albania). Her first book, Non-Muslim Provinces under early Islam, employed mnemohistorical framing to situate how pre-Islamic Iranian traditions informed both Armenian and Arabic accounts of the caliphal North. She has recently completed a collaborative project on an eighth-century Armenian history of the early Caliphate and is now working on gender and identity along the Khazar frontier.
