Hamza M. Zafer (PhD, Cornell 2014) is an Associate Professor of African and Arabian Literature at the University of Washington. This year he is teaching Classical Ethiopic through the Program in African Studies at Princeton. His book Ecumenical Community (Brill, 2020) traces the development of Early Muslim communitarian rhetoric in the wake of the Axum-Himyar wars. His current research explores the Red Sea region between Africa and Arabia as a significant zone of intertextuality before the modern era (600s-1600s).
