This document, originally prepared by graduate students, is a work in progress as funding opportunities may be added or removed as necessary. Please also check Pivot, a resource available to anyone with a Princeton email address. While Pivot is checked weekly for fellowship announcements, Princeton University guidelines prohibit the posting of fellowships and grants that only target specific populations. Thus, not all fellowships relevant to NES graduate students can be added to the ones listed below.

PIIRS Graduate Fellows Program(link is external)

Type: Dissertation Completion Fellowship, for either a semester or the full academic year, to students who have reached Dissertation Completion Enrollment (DCE) status. Priority will be afforded to students who have engaged in extended field research overseas. Seventh-year students are generally not eligible (exceptional cases with cause might be considered).

Eligibility: Advanced graduate students whose dissertations are framed in terms of international or regional studies (broadly defined)

Type: Dissertation completion fellowship, 12 months

Eligibility: Be a candidate for Ph.D. or Th.D. degrees in any field of study in the humanities and social sciences at accredited graduate schools in the United States; have completed all pre-dissertation requirements fulfilled by the application deadline November 15, 2022, including approval of the dissertation proposal; must expect to complete the dissertation between April 1, 2024 and August 31, 2024.

Type: Short or long-term research in Sofia, Bulgaria (3 months or 9 months)

Eligibility: All US-based students (regardless of citizenship) working on any period of Balkan history

Award Amount: Funds are currently low, free housing in shared rooms in the ARCS hostel.

Application Tips: This fellowship can be combined with another fellowship; however, you must notify ARCS, and ARCS will negotiate the terms of the ARCS Fellowship. You are strongly encouraged to inquire about possibilities for funding from your home institution in a timely manner and to indicate this in your application.

 

American Philosophical Society. John C. Slater Predoctoral Fellowship in the History of Science

ARIT Fellowships in the Humanities and Social Science in Turkey(link is external)

Type: Research, one to twelve months

Eligibility: Open; however, non-U.S. applicants who reside in the U.S. or Canada are expected to maintain an affiliation with an educational institution in the U.S. or Canada. Student applicants must have fulfilled all requirements for the doctorate except the dissertation by June 2022 and before beginning any ARIT-sponsored research.

Award Amount: Travel grant of €2,000; Monthly stipend of €1,200 for nine months (October–June); A monthly rental allowance of max. €500 for nine months (October–June), a one-time travel allowance for conferences in the amount of €300, and an all-inclusive allowance for telephone and postal charges in the amount of €200 for the duration of the grant provided by the IFK; This is a supplementary grant, additional funds are required.

Type: Pre-doctoral candidates (ABD) and more advanced scholars, 3–12 months

Eligibility: US citizens

Application Tips: Keep in mind that you’re going to have to apply for a research permit and that in Egypt that notoriously TAKES FOREVER AND A DAY. But they’ll help with the research permit!

 

Palestinian American Research Center (PARC) U.S. Research Fellowships

Type: Two- to twelve-month research fellowship

Eligibility: Applicants must be doctoral students or scholars who have earned their PhD and must be U.S. citizens

PARC Palestinian Research Fellowships

Type: Two- to twelve-month research fellowship

Eligibility: Applicants must be Palestinian doctoral students or Palestinian scholars who have earned their PhD. Palestinians may apply regardless of their country of residence or ID

Hyde Research Fellowship(link is external)

Type: 10-month fellowship for research abroad

Eligibility: Students in NES and other Humanities departments; must have passed the general exams by the time the award period starts; must be enrolled in absentia for the award period. Preference is given to projects requiring residence in England.

Deadline: End of February

Notification Period: Late March

Award Amount: The Hyde Academic Year Research Fellowship will provide a 10-month stipend that is greater than the regular stipend, to cover expenses of living abroad for up to 10 months, as well as the cost of travel from and back to the United States. 

Application Tips: Students must complete an application via GPS(link is external)(link is external) (Global Programs System) to be considered for a Hyde Academic Year Research Fellowship. Application rules and procedures are sent to relevant departments via memo by the dean each year in February, at which time the applications will be made available on GPS. Unfortunately, this fellowship does not qualify students for the DCE funding.

 

HUM (Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program in the Humanities)(link is external)

Type: This is actually a whole interdisciplinary program, that also adds one year of funding.

Eligibility: Humanities graduate students in their third year; Beginning in the AY2020-2021 application cycle, HUM583 will be a pre-requisite for admission to the program. 

Deadline: March 1, 2023

Notification Period: After the interviews in April

Award Amount: It provides the full fellowship for the 4th year, and the regular fellowship is deferred to the 6th-year

Type: Works-in-Progress Workshop (that offers a stipend)

Eligibility: Graduate students whose work engages some manifestation of religion—historical, literary, comparative, empirical, philosophical, social, or cultural.

Application Tips: Application via SAFE; the application is pretty straightforward. Note that enrollment in this fellowship means that you have to participate in a year-long weekly works-in-progress workshop. As part of the workshop, you will be asked to present and respond once each semester.

Type: Summer Research Funding

Eligibility: Any student aiming to do research during the summer abroad

Deadline: Around mid-February

Award Amount: Up to $3000 dollars

Application Tips: You apply via the SAFE system; priority will be given to graduate students who also apply for supplementary funding from organizations outside Princeton University (e.g., NSF, Luce, SSRC) and complete the PIIRS External Funding Form. Applicants are expected to inform PIIRS if they receive awards from other sources as soon as that information is available.

 

PIIRS Winter Research Funding(link is external)

Type: For pre-dissertation and dissertation research to be conducted during the winter recess in the following areas: preliminary archival reconnaissance, field-site investigations, interviews, securing official permission for research sites, and other activities that will ensure a successful dissertation

Type: Year-long Arabic study at a CASA center (currently, theyre only sending students to Qasid in Amman, Jordan)

Eligibility: American citizens and Permanent residents (though if you pay the ~$30,000 dollars the program costs, anyone can do the program)

Deadline: January (6-hour entrance exam is in early February)

Award Amount: Full tuition and stipend (You do have to pay a deposit of $1,850–2,500 and for your own health insurance)

Application Tips: It’s an easy enough application: they like taking academics. The entrance exam is long, but the writing and reading are easy enough for over 4 years of Arabic study. The listening might be more difficult for those who have focused on reading They’re not taking as many people right now because of funding cuts and as it is, they aren’t taking people for the full year, like they used to (only the fall and spring).

 

Yiddish Book Center. Steiner Summer Yiddish Program

Type: ​Language Study

Eligibility: Graduate student of Pre-doc, undergraduate student

Notification Period:

  • Award Amount: The Yiddish Book Center covers tuition, required textbooks, and the cost of program activities. Students are responsible for the cost of transportation to and from the program. The cost of food will vary depending on the available dining options, but will likely not exceed $1,000.
  • Beginner students are responsible for the costs of their housing (approximately $1,800), with subsidies available based on need. The Yiddish Book Center is committed to making the program accessible to every student regardless of financial circumstances.
  • Intermediate students who work as interns receive a subsidy to cover their housing cost, plus the $1,500 stipend. Intermediate students who enroll in the culture course, rather than the internship, do not receive a housing subsidy or stipend, and will be responsible for the cost of housing.
  • International students are responsible for their visa application fees (approximately $350) and SEVIS fees ($180).

Award Amount: Full expenses paid, with stipend (valued at $10,000 to $15,000 based on site)

Application Tips:

  • Emphasize research interests in conjunction with national interests
  • Stress your ability as a graduate student in mentoring younger students also on the programme.
  • If you’ve been accepted and are placed at a site that’s not conducive for your language interests (i.e., you need Moroccan dialect and were placed in Oman), get in touch with CLS as soon as possible and they will probably let you switch sites

American Schools of Oriental Research (ASOR). Student Travel Grants: Annual Meeting Scholarships

Type: ASOR Conference Travel Grants

Eligibility: Students must be enrolled at an institution that is an institutional member of ASOR (see list of Institutional Members). In order to receive the funds, the institutional dues for the student’s school must be current for 2023-2024, and the student must stay at the ASOR hotel. Students need not present a paper in order to be eligible. Preference will be given to students from schools that did not receive an award recipient in the previous year.
