Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship

Type: Dissertation completion fellowship, 12 months

Eligibility: Be a candidate for Ph.D. or Th.D. degrees in any field of study in the humanities and social sciences at accredited graduate schools in the United States; have completed all pre-dissertation requirements fulfilled by the application deadline November 15, 2021, including approval of the dissertation proposal; must expect to complete the dissertation between April 1, 2023 and August 31, 2023.

WW Women’s Studies Fellowships

Type: Dissertation completion fellowship

Eligibility: Ph.D. candidates at institutions in the United States who will complete their dissertations during the fellowship year.

American Institute for Maghrib Studies (AIMS)

ARC Sofia Pre-Doctoral Fellowship (American Research Center in Sofia Foundation)

Type​: Short or long-term research in Sofia, Bulgaria (3 months or 9 months)

Eligibility​: All US-based students (regardless of citizenship) working on any period of Balkan history

Deadline​: March 19, 2022

Notification Period​: Not set, but about a month after the deadline

Award Amount​: Funds are currently low, free housing in shared rooms in the ARCS hostel.

Application Tips​: This fellowship can be combined with another fellowship; however, you must notify ARCS, and ARCS will negotiate the terms of the ARCS Fellowship. You are strongly encouraged to inquire about possibilities for funding from your home institution in a timely manner and to indicate this in your application.

 

ARIT Fellowships in the Humanities and Social Science in Turkey

Type: Research, one to twelve months

Eligibility: Open; however, non-U.S. applicants who reside in the U.S. or Canada are expected to maintain an affiliation with an educational institution in the U.S. or Canada. Student applicants must have fulfilled all requirements for the doctorate except the dissertation by June 2022 and before beginning any ARIT-sponsored research.

Application Tips: ARIT fellowship applicants are responsible for obtaining the appropriate research permissions and visas.

 

ARIT Summer Fellowships for Intensive Advanced Turkish Language Study at Bo​ğ​aziçi ​University, Istanbul

Type:​ Advanced Turkish Language Study

Eligibility:​ US citizens and Permanent Residents; Advanced or high-intermediate level

Deadline: ​Early February

Notification Period:​ Early summer for funding; late summer for visa.

Award Amount:​ Fully-funded study at Boğaziçi University

Type:​ Research abroad, country-specific

Turkish Flagship Language Initiative (TURFLI)

Type:​ Intensive study of Turkish language at University of Wisconsin and Azerbaijan University of Languages

Eligibility:​ US citizen, must fulfill a one-year service requirement

Application Tips:

 

Center for Arabic Studies Abroad (CASA)

Type: ​Year-long Arabic study at a CASA center (currently, they’re only sending students to Qasid in Amman, Jordan)

Eligibility: ​American citizens and Permanent residents (though if you pay the ~$30,000 dollars the program costs, anyone can do the program)

Deadline: ​January (6-hour entrance exam is in early February)

Notification Period:​ Early March

Award Amount:​ Full tuition and stipend (You do have to pay a deposit of $1,850–2,500 and for your own health insurance)

Application Tips: It’s an easy enough application: they like taking academics. The entrance exam is long, but the writing and reading are easy enough for over 4 years of Arabic study. The listening might be more difficult for those who have focused on reading They’re not taking as many people right now because of funding cuts and as it is, they aren’t taking people for the full year, like they used to (only the fall and spring).

 

Critical Language Scholarship (CLS)

Type: ​Summer Language Study for Critical Languages ( Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, Urdu)

Eligibility: ​US citizens enrolled in a degree-granting program

Deadline: ​November 18, 2021

Notification Period:​ mid-late February

Award Amount:​ Full expenses paid, with stipend (valued at $10,000 to $15,000 based on site)

Application Tips:

  • Emphasize research interests in conjunction with national interests
  • Stress your ability as a graduate student in mentoring younger students also on the programme.
  • If you’ve been accepted and are placed at a site that’s not conducive for your language interests (i.e., you need Moroccan dialect and were placed in Oman), get in touch with CLS as soon as possible and they will probably let you switch sites

 

Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Fellowship, apply through Princeton University Graduate School

Type: ​Long-term research, 6-12 months

Eligibility: ​US citizen or permanent resident, done with all dissertation requirements except the dissertation

Wadad Kadi Travel Fellowships for Doctoral Students ​ (MESA)

Type: ​Conference Travel Grant

Eligibility:​ MESA student member must be presenting a paper

Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Completion Fellowships

Type: Dissertation Completion, one-year

Eligibility: be a US-based PhD student, All-But-Dissertation, be no more than six years into the degree program at the time of application (this includes time spent earning an MA within that program), not currently hold or have previously held a dissertation completion fellowship, have not previously applied for this fellowship more than once.

Deadline: October 27, 2021

Notification Period: Late March 2022

Award Amount: $35,000, plus funds for research costs of up to $3,000 and for university fees of up to $5,000

ARCE-CAORC Research Fellowships, American Research Center in Egypt (ARCE)

Type: Pre-doctoral candidates (ABD) and more advanced scholars, 3–12 months

Eligibility: US citizens

Deadline: January 16, 2022

Notification Period: March

Award Amount: $2,200–$3,520 per month, plus round-trip airfare

Application Tips: Keep in mind that you’re going to have to apply for a research permit and that in Egypt that notoriously TAKES FOREVER AND A DAY. But they’ll help with the research permit!

 

Pre-Dissertation Travel Grant, American Research Center in Egypt (ARCE)

Type: Short-term Pre-dissertation Research, 4–8 weeks

Eligibility: US citizens who are Ph.D. graduate students, seeking to do preliminary research

Deadline: January 16, 2022

Notification Period: March

Award Amount: up to $2400 for up to 8 weeks ($300 dollars a week), plus round-trip airfare

Application Tips: Keep in mind that you’re going to have to apply for a research permit and that in Egypt that notoriously TAKES FOREVER AND A DAY. But they’ll help with the research permit!

 

American Research Center in Egypt Short-term Research Grant for Postdoctoral, Adjunct Faculty and Independent Scholars

Type: Short-term (3-6 weeks) Research

Eligibility: U.S. citizen postdoctoral, adjunct, community college, HBCU/MSI faculty, and visiting or independent scholars whose access to institutional funding for research travel may be limited.

Deadline: Applications due January 16, 2022, 11:50 PM PST

Notification Period:

Award Amount: $2,640 plus roundtrip airfare

Application Tips:

 

ARCE Annual Meeting Grant for Underrepresented Students

Type: Conference travel grant.

Eligibility: Undergraduate or graduate students from typically underrepresented groups whose studies are related to relevant fields

Deadline: February 15, 2022

Notification Period:

Award Amount: All fees related to ARCE Annual Meeting registration, lodging and breakfasts, and transportation, maximum award $500

Application Tips:

 

Social Science Research Council’s International Dissertation Research Fellowship (SSRC - IDRF)

Type: Long-term research, 6–12 months

Eligibility: The program is open to graduate students in the humanities and humanistic social sciences—regardless of citizenship—enrolled in PhD programs in the United States. Applicants to the IDRF competition must complete all PhD requirements except on-site research by the time the fellowship begins or by December of the year they apply, whichever comes first.

Deadline: November 2, 2021

Notification Period: Incomplete and ineligible applicants will be informed of their status by December of the year they apply. All other applicants will be contacted by the program, via email or USPS, about their status the following February. Fellows and alternates will be notified in May.

Award Amount: average award amount is $23,000.

Application Tips: This application isn’t complicated because it has a lot of components, but because it has very little in the way of guidance on its website concerning the application. You are given a large page limit for the proposal and then told to explain yourself in that space. You should start this one as soon as you can. It helps to have your prospectus done when you apply for this.

 

University Funding

Hyde Research Fellowship

Type: 10-month fellowship for research abroad

Eligibility: Students in NES and other Humanities departments; must have passed the general exams by the time the award period starts; must be enrolled in absentia for the award period. Preference is given to projects requiring residence in England.

Deadline: End of February

Notification Period: Late March

Award Amount: The Hyde Academic Year Research Fellowship will provide a 10-month stipend that is greater than the regular stipend, to cover expenses of living abroad for up to 10 months, as well as the cost of travel from and back to the United States. 

Application Tips: Students must complete an application via GPS(link is external) (Global Programs System) to be considered for a Hyde Academic Year Research Fellowship. Application rules and procedures are sent to relevant departments via memo by the dean each year in February, at which time the applications will be made available on GPS. Unfortunately, this fellowship does not qualify students for the DCE funding.

 

Hyde Summer Research

Award Type: Short-term Research in July and August

Eligibility: Students in NES and other Humanities departments; must have passed the general exams by the time the award period starts

HUM (Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program in the Humanities)

Type: This is actually a whole interdisciplinary program, that also adds one year of funding.

Eligibility: Humanities graduate students in their third year; Beginning in the AY2020-2021 application cycle, HUM583 will be a pre-requisite for admission to the program. 

Deadline: March 1, 2022

Notification Period: After the interviews in April

Award Amount: It provides the full fellowship for the 4th year, and the regular fellowship is deferred to the 6th-year

Application Tips:

 

PIIRS Graduate Fellows Program

Type: Dissertation Completion Fellowship, for either a semester or the full academic year, to students who have reached Dissertation Completion Enrollment (DCE) status. Priority will be afforded to students who have engaged in extended field research overseas. Seventh-year students are generally not eligible (exceptional cases with cause might be considered).

Eligibility: Advanced graduate students whose dissertations are framed in terms of international or regional studies (broadly defined)

Award Amount: Stipend rate is equal to 10 months of the University Fellowship. Half-year grants are awarded for 5 months, and the stipend rate is equal to 5 months of the University Fellowship.

PIIRS Summer Language Funding

Type: Summer Language Funding

Eligibility: Anyone whose research requires further language acquisition; to my knowledge you can even be ABD

Deadline: Around mid-February

Notification Period: late March / early April

Award Amount: Up to $3000 dollars

Application Tips: You apply via the SAFE system; priority will be given to graduate students who also apply for supplementary funding from organizations outside Princeton University (e.g., NSF, Luce, SSRC) and complete the PIIRS External Funding Form. Applicants are expected to inform PIIRS if they receive awards from other sources as soon as that information is available

 

PIIRS Summer Research Funding

Type: Summer Research Funding

Eligibility: Any student aiming to do research during the summer abroad

Deadline: Around mid-February

Notification Period: late March / early April

Award Amount: Up to $3000 dollars

Application Tips: You apply via the SAFE system; priority will be given to graduate students who also apply for supplementary funding from organizations outside Princeton University (e.g., NSF, Luce, SSRC) and complete the PIIRS External Funding Form. Applicants are expected to inform PIIRS if they receive awards from other sources as soon as that information is available

 

PIIRS Winter Research Funding

Type: For pre-dissertation and dissertation research to be conducted during the winter recess in the following areas: preliminary archival reconnaissance, field-site investigations, interviews, securing official permission for research sites, and other activities that will ensure a successful dissertation

Eligibility: Any student aiming to do research during the winter recess

Center for the Study of Religion

Type: Works-in-Progress Workshop (that offers a stipend)

Eligibility: anyone whose research deals with religion: “Religion and Culture” is more for humanities students while “Religion and Public Life” is more for social science students. You can technically apply any year, including both regularly enrolled and DCE students, but since it is a works-in-progress workshop this tends to be geared more towards post-generals students

Deadline: March 1

Notification Period: late March / early May

Award Amount: $6,500 plus access to the center’s resources (such as your own desk/workspace)

Application Tips: Application via SAFE; the application is pretty straightforward. Note that enrollment in this fellowship means that you have to participate in a year-long weekly works-in-progress workshop. As part of the workshop, you will be asked to present and respond once each semester.
