Marina Rustow, Khedouri A. Zilkha Professor of Jewish Civilization in the Near East and Professor of Near Eastern Studies and History, has been featured on the University homepage in a section titled “Exceptional Faculty.” It cites Rustow’s use of “machine learning to decipher thousands of Arabic and Hebrew fragments preserved in a medieval Cairo synagogue that open a new window onto premodern history.” The homepage also links to a University story about Rustow’s Haskin’s Medal for her book, The Lost Archive: Traces of a Caliphate in a Caito Synagogue (Princeton University Press, 2020). Here is a story about the machine-learning project.
