The New Cambridge History of Islam won the 2011 Waldo G. Leland Prize for the “most outstanding reference tool in the field of history” published between May 1, 2006, and April 30, 2011. Michael A. Cook, the Class of 1943 University Professor of Near Eastern Studies, was the general editor of the six-volume set, which was published in 2010 by Cambridge University Press. The Waldo G. Leland Prize, “established by the AHA Council in 1981, is … named after Waldo G. Leland, a distinguished contributor to bibliographical guides, who served as secretary to the Association from 1909 to 1920. ‘Reference tool’ encompasses bibliographies, indexes, encyclopedias, and other scholarly apparatus.”
